Patrick was born in Bethesda, north Wales. He began his musical education taking local piano lessons with Rhian Roberts and Sioned Webb. He had classical violin lessons at Llanllechid and Tryfan schools, but he also began attending COTC workshops (now CLERA, the Welsh society for traditional instruments) to learn traditional melodies. He was totally inspired by the first workshop he attended (aged 9) led by Huw Roberts in Bangor in 2001. He continued to attend a numerous workshops by some of Wales’s most prominent folk musicians, and took lessons with Glenys Jones, Jane Foad and Edward Davies. He owes a debt of gratitude to his parents (and to a number of Bangor public houses) for allowing him to attend the sessions when he was still a primary school pupil!

He has won the Celtic violin championships in Pembrokeshire on two consecutive occasions, and was awarded the Blue Riband for Instrumentalists at the Anglesey Eisteddfod for his performance in the folk music competition. Since 2008, Patrick has been a member of the successful band Calan. They have since released two CDs on the Sain label, have toured in Wales and further afield – and in 2009 they won the ‘Loic Raison’ competition for bands at the Lorient Festival in Brittany.

Patrick is currently in his fourth year of music studies at Leeds University, having returned from the Janacek Akademie in the Czech Republic. Hei is studying the viola under Lucy Nolan, and is leader of the University’s symphony orchestra. He performs regularly around the UK and internationally with a number of artists, including Calan, Cerys Matthews and Dawnswyr Nantgarw.
