Cardiff is pleased to have been selected as the city to host WOMEX, the leading world music expo, in 2013. The announcement comes at the end of a year-long campaign by Cerdd Cymru : Music Wales to bring the event to the Welsh Capital.
The fully programmed, prestigious international showcase event includes around 60 concerts featuring 300 plus artists, a trade fair exhibiting in the region of 650 companies from over 90 countries, as well as more than 400 national and international journalists.
Cardiff presented WOMEX with the best all-round offer in the bidding process and beat tough international competition. The ambition to host WOMEX is supported by Welsh Government’s new Major Events Strategy, which aims to develop global events in Wales.
WOMEX 2013 will take place in Cardiff 23-27 October 2013 at Wales Millennium Centre, a pavilion in Roald Dahl Plas and Motorpoint Arena.

WOMEX is decribed by UNESCO - the Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity - as:
"The most important international professional market of world music of every kind. This international fair brings together professionals from the worlds of folk, roots, ethnic and traditional music and also includes concerts, conferences and documentary films. It contributes to networking as an effective means of promoting music and culture of all kinds across frontiers."
Since 1994 WOMEX editions in Belgium (Brussels), Denmark (Copenhagen), France (Marseille),Germany (Berlin and Essen), Great Britain (Newcastle Gateshead), Netherlands (Rotterdam), Spain (Sevilla) and Sweden (Stockholm) have affirmed the value and potential of networking across borders, be these musical, political, cultural or commercial. The yearly event (and the growing number of WOMEX-partnered events around the world) reflects "the soundscape of global diversity" and is at the forefront of support and exchange for small and medium enterprises in the fields of creative and cultural industries.
